10 free things to do in Newcastle

Sydney charges you for everything. Newcastle, two hours up the road, gives you what might be the best free day out in Australia. Here are ten worth your time, none of them cost a cent, laid out in the order you would actually do them: north to south down the coast, then inland.

The coast (a morning on Bathers Way): Nobbys, Fort Scratchley, ANZAC Memorial Walk, Bogey Hole, Merewether Ocean Baths. Inland (an afternoon): Glenrock, Blackbutt Reserve, Newcastle Art Gallery, Christ Church Cathedral. Cost: nothing but parking and coffee.
Map of Newcastle marking the ten free things to do, numbered to the sections below: the coast runs from Nobbys in the north-east down to Merewether, with Glenrock and Blackbutt in the bushland to the west and the Art Gallery and Cathedral in the CBD.

The ten stops on the map, numbered to the sections below. Red 1 to 6 run down the coast from Nobbys to Merewether, black 7 to 10 are the bushland and CBD stops.

1. Nobbys Breakwall and lighthouse

Start at the bottom of Nobbys Breakwall and walk out to the lighthouse. On one side is the harbour and the coal ships lining up, on the other it is open Pacific. The headland itself only opens on Sundays, so if you want to stand under the light, plan for that.

Good to know. The big Nobbys and Horseshoe car park is the easiest free parking on the coast, and the Swell kiosk sorts the coffee. Bringing the dog? Horseshoe Beach right here is the off-leash spot, covered in our dog-friendly Newcastle guide. This is also the northern end of the Newcastle beaches.

2. Fort Scratchley

Back across the beach is Fort Scratchley, the only fort in Australia that ever fired on an enemy ship. A Japanese submarine shelled the city in 1942 and the fort fired back. The grounds and the gun deck are free, and if you time it right you will catch the guns being fired. The tunnels underneath are the one thing here you pay for.

Good to know. Free entry to the grounds, ticketed for the guided tunnel tours. Gun firings and tour times run on set days, so check ahead before you build the day around them.

3. ANZAC Memorial Walk

Climb up onto the Memorial Walk, a steel walkway bolted to the cliff above the coast. The silhouettes along the rail carry the family names of the eleven thousand people from the Hunter who enlisted in the First World War. Go late in the day, when the light comes in low across the water.

Good to know. Free, and part of the Bathers Way. It is exposed up there, so it can be windy and there is no shade.

4. The Bogey Hole

Below the cliff is the Bogey Hole, cut into the rock by convicts in 1819 for the commandant's private swim. It is the oldest ocean pool in the country. On a calm day it is the best swim in Newcastle. On a big day it is closed, and that is not a suggestion.

Good to know. Free, no facilities, and only as safe as the swell allows. If the waves are washing through it, stay out. More on the coast in our beaches guide.

5. Bathers Way

Everything so far sits on Bathers Way, the coastal path that runs about six kilometres from Nobbys to Merewether. You can do the whole thing in a couple of hours, and every beach along it has a set of stairs down to the sand. It is the single best way to understand the Newcastle coast.

Good to know. Free, and you can join it at any beach and walk as much or as little as you like. Our beaches guide breaks down every beach it passes.

6. Merewether Ocean Baths

At the southern end you hit Merewether Ocean Baths, among the largest ocean baths in the southern hemisphere. Fifty metres of saltwater, free, sunrise to dark. Locals swim laps here in the middle of winter. You do not have to.

Good to know. Free and open year-round subject to cleaning. Coffee on the sand at Blue Door Kiosk and Sunnyboy, or browse more Newcastle cafes.

7. Glenrock

Keep going past the last houses and you are in Glenrock, a stretch of coastal bush with a lagoon at the bottom of it. The walk down to the lagoon is about forty minutes each way, and if you have a mountain bike the trails through here are some of the best in the state.

Good to know. Free, wear proper shoes, and take water. Facilities are limited once you are down in the reserve.

8. Blackbutt Reserve

Head inland to Blackbutt Reserve. Entry is free, and there are koalas, wombats and a walk-through aviary, plus the best playground in the city. It is the standout free day out for families.

Good to know. Free entry. Parking is the only thing that costs, and it is a couple of dollars.

9. Newcastle Art Gallery

Back in town, Newcastle Art Gallery reopened after a major expansion, and it is still free to walk in. The collection is one of the strongest in regional Australia. Give it an hour and you will want two.

Good to know. Free entry. Check the current hours before a special trip, as they vary around exhibitions.

10. Christ Church Cathedral

Finish on the hill at Christ Church Cathedral. It took most of a century to build, it is open to anyone, and from the grounds you get the whole city in one look: the harbour, the beaches, and every place on this list.

Good to know. Free to enter and visit, though it is a working cathedral, so services take priority over sightseeing.

Make a day of it

Run it as one loop. Do the coast in the morning, walking or cycling Bathers Way from Nobbys south, then drive the inland stops in the afternoon. Pack swimmers for the Bogey Hole and Merewether Baths, wear shoes you can walk in, and you will have spent a full day out in Newcastle for the price of a coffee and a parking spot.

Hungry along the way? The coast is lined with kiosks and the town is full of good cafes. Browse Newcastle cafes, or see more local guides including the full beaches and dog-friendly rundowns.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best free things to do in Newcastle?

The classic free day runs down the coast: Nobbys Breakwall and lighthouse, Fort Scratchley, the ANZAC Memorial Walk, the Bogey Hole, the full Bathers Way path, and Merewether Ocean Baths, then inland to Glenrock, Blackbutt Reserve, Newcastle Art Gallery and Christ Church Cathedral. None of them charge entry.

Is Fort Scratchley free?

The grounds and the gun deck are free to walk. The guided tours through the tunnels underneath are the part you pay for. It is the only fort in Australia to have fired on an enemy ship, during the Japanese submarine attack on Newcastle in 1942.

Is the Bogey Hole safe to swim in?

On a calm day it is one of the best swims in Newcastle. It is an open rock pool cut into the cliff below King Edward Park, so on a big swell the waves wash straight through it and it becomes dangerous. Check the conditions, and if it looks rough, stay out.

Where can I park for free near the Newcastle foreshore?

The large Nobbys and Horseshoe car park has been free seven days a week and is the easiest big car park on the coast. City-centre parking is more limited and metered in places, so read the signs on the day.

Can you do all ten in one day?

Yes. The coastal stops from Nobbys to Merewether all sit on the Bathers Way path, which is about 6km and walkable in a morning. Glenrock, Blackbutt, the Art Gallery and the Cathedral are quick drives, so an afternoon covers the inland half.

Are any of these free things dog-friendly?

Some are. Horseshoe Beach beside Nobbys is the off-leash dog beach, and King Edward Park is off-leash, but the main swimming beaches are not. Our dog-friendly Newcastle guide has the full picture.

Is Newcastle Art Gallery free to visit?

Yes. Entry to Newcastle Art Gallery is free, and it holds one of the strongest public collections in regional Australia. It reopened after a major expansion, so allow more than the hour you think you need.
